Morocco and Gambia Forge Deeper Military Ties
Morocco and Gambia have been steadily fortifying their diplomatic relationship since King Mohammed VI's historic visit to the West African nation in 2006. In a significant move this week, the two countries have taken strides to bolster their military cooperation through high-level discussions between defense officials.
General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of Morocco's Royal Armed Forces (FAR), convened with Gambian Chief of Defense Staff General Mamat Oa Cham during an official visit to Morocco. This meeting, convened at FAR headquarters, was initiated under the directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who serves as the Supreme Commander of the armed forces.
The discussions revolved around advancing military collaboration, with a particular focus on enhancing training programs, sharing expertise, and engaging in joint exercises. Both generals expressed contentment with the existing ties between their nations and explored avenues to further strengthen cooperation based on mutual interests.
This visit comes amid a positive trajectory in Morocco-Gambia relations, solidified by Gambia's robust support for Morocco's stance on Western Sahara. Notably, Gambia inaugurated a consulate in Dakhla in 2020, demonstrating tangible diplomatic support. Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara has consistently reaffirmed Gambia's unwavering backing of Morocco's territorial integrity.
During his recent official visit to Morocco, Minister Tangara commended HM King Mohammed VI's proactive measures to foster socio-economic development in the Sahel region. The latest defense talks signify Morocco and Gambia's shared commitment to not only diplomatic ties but also strengthening their military bonds.
