US intensifies military presence in the Middle East amid Yemen strikes
The United States has intensified its military operations in Yemen, launching strikes in the Hodeidah region that resulted in four reported fatalities. The attacks, part of ongoing military actions against Houthi forces, coincide with the deployment of a second US aircraft carrier and additional warplanes to the Middle East.
Anees Alasbahi, spokesperson for the Houthi-controlled health ministry, confirmed that Tuesday night’s US strikes targeted a water management facility in al-Mansouriyah, Hodeidah, causing three deaths and two injuries, primarily among employees. Later reports from Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV indicated that the death toll had risen to four. Simultaneous attacks were also reported in the Hajjah and Saada regions.
Although the US has not officially acknowledged these latest strikes, Al Masirah TV reported multiple American attacks in Saada and Sanaa the previous night. Since Washington initiated its offensive on March 15, more than 60 people have been killed in Yemen. The escalation follows Houthi threats to resume attacks on Israeli-linked shipping in the Red Sea in response to Israel’s ceasefire violations in Gaza.
In response to growing regional tensions, the Pentagon announced that the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier would be deployed alongside the USS Harry S Truman in the Middle East. Additional US military aircraft are also being mobilized to bolster security in the region. The Pentagon reiterated its commitment to countering threats from both state and non-state actors in the area.
Houthi forces claimed responsibility for launching cruise missiles and drones at US ships within the Truman carrier group, marking their third attack on American naval assets within 24 hours.
While US defense officials did not confirm specific reinforcements, at least four B-2 bombers have reportedly been repositioned to Diego Garcia, a strategic US-British military base in the Indian Ocean, placing them within striking range of Yemen and Iran. However, the US Strategic Command has refrained from disclosing details regarding bomber deployment.
The escalation aligns with recent statements from former US President Donald Trump, who vowed to continue strikes on Houthi targets until their threat to maritime security is neutralized. Trump has also intensified rhetoric against Iran, warning that military action is possible if Tehran does not agree to Washington’s demands regarding its nuclear program.
In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei cautioned that the US would face consequences if Trump followed through with his threats. Additionally, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard commander, Amirali Hajizadeh, warned that US military bases in the Middle East remain vulnerable. Reports from Iranian media suggest that Tehran has positioned missiles capable of striking US-related targets.
