The United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) has elected Morocco as its vice-chair for 2025, with Ambassador Omar Hilale representing the country in this prominent role. Serving as Africa’s representative for the year, Morocco’s new position underscores its growing influence in global peace and security initiatives, particularly in Africa.

In the same meeting, PBC members reaffirmed Hilale’s leadership as chair of the Central African Republic (CAR) Configuration for Peacebuilding. This marks a continuation of his commitment to fostering stability and development in the CAR, where Morocco has played a key role in peacebuilding efforts.

This is the first time Morocco has secured the vice-chair position within the PBC, an intergovernmental body composed of 31 members. The PBC works to mobilize support, coordinate strategies for post-conflict recovery, and secure funding for reconstruction projects. Morocco’s election highlights its diplomatic leadership and its contributions to peacebuilding efforts across multiple levels.

The renewal of Hilale’s mandate as chair of the CAR Configuration reflects the UN’s confidence in Morocco’s dedication to promoting stability, supporting local elections, and driving sustainable development. Since 2014, Morocco has deployed over 12,000 peacekeeping troops to the CAR, becoming the first nation to contribute forces to the region even before the establishment of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

In his acceptance speech, Hilale announced plans for an official visit to Bangui, spearheaded by the Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO). The mission will focus on securing resources for local elections and ensuring alignment between national priorities and the realities on the ground. This initiative will be carried out in collaboration with Central African authorities and international partners.

Morocco’s enduring contributions to peacekeeping and its leadership within the UN framework continue to solidify its reputation as a pivotal player in global peace and security efforts.
