US political reactions to Israel’s strikes on Iran
Washington, DC – Just hours before Israel initiated its first round of airstrikes against Iran, US President Donald Trump reaffirmed the country's commitment to pursuing diplomacy with Tehran. However, Israel’s actions early Friday jeopardized these diplomatic efforts and heightened the risk of a broader conflict in the Middle East, potentially involving the US.
The Israeli attacks prompted contrasting responses across the American political spectrum. While some on the far right and left cautioned Trump against being drawn into war with Iran, strong support for Israel remains within the US political mainstream, despite some recent fractures in public and political opinion.
As the bombings targeted Tehran and other cities, many US politicians expressed prayers for Israel’s safety, while others voiced concern or disapproval of the escalating tensions.
US Administration Distances Itself
The Trump administration quickly stated that the US was not involved in the Israeli strikes, emphasizing the protection of American forces in the region. In contrast, progressive Democrats condemned the strikes, warning that war with Iran would harm US interests and derail diplomacy. Senator Chris Murphy called the attacks a sabotage of Trump’s efforts and a dangerous escalation. Other Democrats urged restraint and diplomatic solutions to prevent further conflict.
