Severe Winter Weather Alert: Morocco's Atlas Mountains Brace for Heavy Snowfall
Morocco's mountainous regions are preparing for significant snowfall this weekend, as the Directorate General of Meteorology (DGM) issues an orange-level alert for multiple provinces. The weather system is expected to bring substantial snow accumulation from Saturday through Monday, potentially affecting travel and daily life in several regions.
The forecast predicts snowfall accumulations between 20 and 40 centimeters in areas above 1,500 meters elevation, specifically impacting the provinces of Azilal, Beni Mellal, Al Haouz, Midelt, Tinghir, and Ouarzazate. Additionally, moderate snowfall of 10 to 20 centimeters is expected in Ifrane, Chichaoua, Boulemane, and Taroudant provinces.
This weather event follows a week of extreme cold temperatures across Morocco, with recent snowfall already transforming the Atlas Mountains into scenic winter landscapes. Residents have shared social media footage showcasing snow-covered roads and mountains, highlighting the visual impact of these winter conditions.
The weather system's effects extend beyond snowfall, as several coastal and southern provinces, including Sidi Ifni, Chtouka Ait Baha, Agadir Ida-Outanane, and others, have experienced strong winds and dust storms. While some regions have received rainfall this month, precipitation remains inconsistent and insufficient, adding to concerns about the country's ongoing drought conditions.
Local communities are particularly hopeful for increased rainfall to help alleviate the current water crisis and its impact on the agricultural sector. The DGM has urged residents in affected areas to take necessary precautions and prepare for potential weather-related disruptions.
This comprehensive weather alert underscores the diverse meteorological challenges facing Morocco, from heavy mountain snow to persistent drought conditions, highlighting the complex climate patterns affecting the region.
