Fuel Prices Surge by 16.9% in the EU in July 2026

The cost at the pump has once again increased for European drivers. According to the latest data released by Eurostat on August 21, fuel and lubricant prices for personal transport in the European Union rose by 16.9% in July 2026 compared to a year earlier. This new increase confirms the ongoing pressures on mobility costs, following a 20.7% rise in May and a 13.7% rise in June.

A Widespread Increase Across Europe

The price increase was not limited to a few isolated markets. In July, 25 out of 27 EU member states recorded an annual rise in fuel and lubricant prices for personal transport.

Romania topped the list with a 24.2% increase. Germany and Lithuania followed, each seeing a rise of 22.9%. Bulgarian prices also saw a significant increase at 22.2%, while The Netherlands and Finland recorded increases of 22% and 20.5%, respectively.

In contrast, the price increases were much more limited in some countries. Sweden showed the lowest annual increase at 1.2%, followed by Ireland at 3.2%. Hungary was the only exception among EU member states, with a slight decrease of 0.1% year-on-year.

This dispersion illustrates very different national trajectories in response to changes in energy and mobility prices.

Diesel and Gasoline Prices Rise Again in July

Eurostat data also shows a marked reversal month-on-month. Between June and July 2026, the price of diesel increased by 4.3% in the European Union, while gasoline prices rose by 4.7%.

This trend contrasts with that observed in June. During that period, prices had decreased by 6.4% for diesel and 4.2% for gasoline compared to the previous month. The movement observed in July therefore indicates a renewed acceleration of pump prices across Europe.

However, diesel prices did not increase everywhere. Prices rose in 17 countries between June and July, while nine member states recorded a decrease. The most significant declines were observed in Cyprus (-7.9%), Sweden (-7.4%), and Ireland (-6.4%).

For gasoline, 14 countries recorded an increase and 12 a decrease. Poland stands out with a monthly increase of 17.2%, followed by Germany (+11%) and Spain (+7.1%). Conversely, prices notably decreased in Sweden, Cyprus, and Ireland.

Poland and Germany Among the Most Volatile Markets

Poland shows the most dramatic monthly variations in July for both diesel and gasoline. Diesel prices increased by 13.4% in one month, while gasoline surged by 17.2%.

Germany is also among the most affected markets. Diesel prices rose by 12.7% between June and July, marking the second-highest monthly increase in the European Union. Greece completes the trio for diesel with a 12.1% increase.

These developments come as energy continues to weigh on European inflation. In July 2026, annual inflation was recorded at 3% in the European Union, compared to 2.9% in June. In the Eurozone, it reached 2.9%, up from 2.8% the previous month, while energy contributed significantly to the rise in prices.

Ongoing Pressure on Drivers

Beyond the mere evolution of pump prices, the rising cost of fuels can impact household expenses and costs related to professional and personal travel. For drivers who use their vehicles daily, the annual increase recorded in July represents additional pressure on their transportation budget.

Eurostat figures, however, show that the situation is not uniform. While several Central and Eastern European countries report annual increases exceeding 20%, some Northern and Western European markets experience much more moderate increases.

The trend in the coming months will therefore be closely monitored. After a slowdown in annual growth between May and June, the increase in July serves as a reminder that the European fuel market remains subject to significant fluctuations.

Sources and Methodology

The data published by Eurostat comes from the harmonized consumer price index (HICP), used to compare price evolution among EU member states. The category studied covers fuels and lubricants intended for personal transport equipment, including diesel and gasoline.
