Drownings in France: 301 Deaths Recorded Since the Start of Summer
France is facing a heavy toll from drownings since the beginning of the summer season. Since June 19, 301 deaths have been recorded, marking a 14% increase compared to the same period in 2025, according to figures released on Sunday by the Minister of Sports, Youth and Associative Life, Marina Ferrari.
This rise comes during a summer marked by several heatwaves, which have led to increased attendance at beaches, pools, rivers, and other swimming areas. Authorities are thus calling for heightened vigilance in the face of sometimes risky behaviors.
Elderly People Particularly Affected
The elderly are among the populations most affected by these fatal accidents. The minister notably highlighted the significant number of drownings that have occurred in private pools.
Failure to adhere to safety rules before or during swimming is one of the main risk factors. Among the dangers mentioned is hydrocut, which can occur when entering cold water suddenly after prolonged exposure to heat.
Overestimating one's physical abilities also poses a risk, particularly in open water swimming areas.
Heatwaves Encourage Risky Behaviors
The heatwaves of summer have led more people to seek swimming spots to cool off, including in areas that are not always suitable or safe.
Canals and certain rivers can particularly attract swimmers, while their currents, depth, or lack of supervision can increase dangers.
In Île-de-France, authorities are working on improving swimming conditions and enhancing safety at the relevant sites.
In light of this toll, public authorities emphasize the importance of adopting the right reflexes: checking swimming conditions, considering one's physical state, avoiding swimming alone, and adhering to safety guidelines, especially during periods of high temperatures.
