Morocco's Avocado Exports Hit Record 42,000 Tons as Global Markets Shift

Morocco's avocado industry has marked a significant milestone, exporting 42,000 tons between October and December 2024, setting the stage for projected exports of 90,000 tons by the season's end. This robust performance indicates a substantial growth from the previous year's 60,000-ton export volume.

According to Abdellah Yamlahi, President of the Moroccan Avocado Association, the sector has achieved notable expansion in European markets. However, the industry faces a complex market dynamic: while export volumes have increased, European consumer demand has softened, leading to price decreases in destination markets. Interestingly, local farmgate prices have bucked this trend, rising to MAD 19-20 per kilogram.

The strategic timing of Morocco's harvest could prove crucial for maintaining market competitiveness. Yamlahi emphasized the importance of accelerated harvesting during favorable weather conditions, positioning Moroccan producers to gain an advantage over key competitors including Spain, Colombia, and Israel.

The sector's growth extends beyond traditional growing regions, with new avocado farming operations emerging in Tiflet, Moulay Bousselham, and Larache. This geographical expansion reflects Morocco's broader strategy to strengthen its position in the global avocado trade. Current projections indicate that domestic consumption will account for just 10% of total production, highlighting the industry's export-oriented focus.

The rapid development of Morocco's avocado sector demonstrates the country's growing agricultural capabilities, though success in international markets will require continued adaptation to changing consumer demands and competitive pressures.
