Russia-Ukraine War: Key Developments on January 10, Day 1,051

Fighting

In Donetsk's Siversk town, two civilians lost their lives due to shelling by Russian forces, as reported by the regional governor. Similarly, two more were killed in Kamyanka-Dniprovska, located in the Russian-occupied Zaporizhia region, during Ukrainian attacks, according to Moscow-appointed officials.

A recent Russian-guided bomb attack on the Ukrainian-controlled part of Zaporizhia resulted in at least 13 civilian deaths and injuries to around 30 individuals. Ukraine's air force revealed that Russia has deployed over 51,000 guided bombs since the invasion escalated nearly three years ago.

Russian troops have reportedly secured a bridgehead across the Oskil River, a key frontline in the eastern Kharkiv region, highlighting Ukraine's ongoing challenges on the battlefield.

Weapons

An international coalition, led by the United Kingdom and Latvia, announced the procurement of 30,000 drones to bolster Ukraine’s capabilities, according to the UK defense authorities.

Politics and Diplomacy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed agreements with Western allies to provide an additional $2 billion in military aid. The U.S. also pledged $500 million, including air defense systems and support equipment for F-16 jets, as per Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Zelenskyy held discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome, who reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to supporting Ukraine. Separately, French and British leaders emphasized their unified stance on assisting Ukraine.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu attributed ongoing power outages in Transnistria to actions by a major Russian energy provider. Meanwhile, Slovakia hinted at potential repercussions against Ukraine over gas disputes.

Transport

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency issued warnings against flying over western Russian airspace, citing risks of accidental targeting by defense systems. This advisory followed an incident involving the downing of an aircraft in Kazakhstan, which led to multiple fatalities.
