In a revelation that underscores the growing appreciation for locally manufactured goods, Morocco's Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, disclosed a remarkable statistic during a parliamentary session on Monday. According to Mezzour, a staggering 62% of Moroccan consumers now prefer domestic products over imported alternatives, a notable surge from a mere 30% just five years ago.

Addressing two oral questions on the theme of "local products" at the House of Representatives, the minister highlighted the ministry's concerted efforts to bolster the confidence of Moroccan citizens in their nation's industrial output. This strategic move aims to foster the growth of the local industry while simultaneously enhancing the global demand for Moroccan-made products.

Mezzour emphasized the pivotal role of the industrial sector in driving Morocco's development, generating employment opportunities, and empowering the nation's youth. He attributed the country's entry into a new era of industrial sovereignty to the visionary leadership of His Majesty the King, underscoring the priority to address the needs of Moroccan citizens.

The minister explained that previous industrial strategies primarily focused on seeking international markets for Moroccan products. However, the current paradigm shift places a renewed emphasis on strengthening national industries and asserting sovereignty, paving the way for homegrown solutions and innovations across both emerging and traditional sectors, such as textiles and agri-food.

Responding to a separate oral question from the Authenticity and Modernity Group on "upgrading industrial zones," Mezzour revealed that a comprehensive study examining 116 industrial zones had facilitated the rehabilitation of 900 hectares over the past five years.

Since the inception of the current government, the minister highlighted that an additional 431 hectares of industrial zones have undergone comprehensive upgrades, encompassing enhancements to infrastructure, utilities, electricity, and water treatment facilities. Notably, an annual allocation of 200 to 300 hectares is dedicated to these revitalization efforts, ensuring the continuous improvement of industrial zones across the nation.

As Morocco's industrial landscape continues to evolve, the growing consumer preference for locally manufactured goods serves as a testament to the nation's commitment to fostering self-sufficiency and bolstering its industrial prowess. By nurturing domestic industries and elevating homegrown solutions, Morocco is poised to solidify its position as a formidable force in the global manufacturing arena.
