Climate Day 2024: A Collaborative Effort Towards Sustainable Electrification in Africa

The historic Chellah site in Rabat served as the backdrop for the successful conclusion of the 4th edition of Climate Day, an event that has become pivotal in the global dialogue on climate change. This year, over 450 participants from diverse sectors including public officials, private enterprises, and representatives from national and international organizations gathered to address urgent environmental issues and advocate for sustainable initiatives across Africa.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Christopher Guerin, CEO of Nexans, who emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in combating climate change. Keynote speeches were delivered by prominent figures such as Ms. Leila Benali, Morocco's Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development; Mr. Ryad Mezzour, Minister of Industry and Trade; and Mr. Ibrahim Matola, Malawi's Minister of Energy. Three engaging panel discussions explored the challenges surrounding sustainable electrification, Morocco's potential in energy transition, and the vital role of innovation in fostering a sustainable ecosystem.

Nexans and the Fondation Nexans: Empowering Vulnerable Communities

A significant highlight of Climate Day was Nexans Morocco and Fondation Nexans' initiative to electrify the “Shems'y” village, a refuge for orphans affected by the devastating earthquake in El Haouz on September 8, 2023. This project, spearheaded by the Moroccan Association for the Assistance of Children in Precarious Situations (AMESIP), aims to support 150 orphans aged between infancy and 18 years. The village is designed to provide educational and cultural resources alongside social and psychological support services, creating a nurturing environment for recovery.

In a symbolic gesture witnessed by Minister Dr. Leila Benali, Minister Mr. Ryad Mezzour, and Ms. Touraya Jaidi Bouabid, President of AMESIP, Nexans launched the electrification project. The installation of photovoltaic panels was funded by Fondation Nexans, while Nexans Morocco supplied essential cables and electrical equipment to ensure a reliable energy source for this model village.

Recognizing Innovation: The Nexans Climate Challenge

The day also featured an awards ceremony celebrating six innovative projects recognized during the Nexans Climate Challenge. This competition aims to highlight groundbreaking ideas that reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency. Each winner received funding to facilitate the implementation of their initiatives, emphasizing a commitment to fostering environmental innovation.

The 4th edition of Climate Day successfully fulfilled its mission by facilitating high-level discussions while inspiring tangible projects that support energy transition efforts throughout Africa. As part of its ongoing dedication to sustainable development, Nexans announced that the next Climate Day will be held in Toronto, Canada.
