The traditional Moroccan caftan took center stage at the recent BRICS+ Fashion Summit in Moscow, captivating fashion experts and enthusiasts alike. The event, held from October 3 to 5, aimed to foster global interactions in the fashion sector for emerging countries.

Wafaa Daoui, a member of the Silk Road and Al Andalus Association, emphasized the significance of the Moroccan caftan's presence at the summit. "This is about showcasing Moroccan culture and our expertise in the fashion sector," she stated. Daoui highlighted that the summit also served as a platform for organizations and experts to discuss collaboration opportunities.

The Moroccan caftan's unique appeal extends beyond its visual aesthetics. "The Moroccan caftan is a unique piece. Beyond the outfit, there is a whole story and storytelling behind it," Daoui explained, underlining the garment's cultural significance.

The BRICS+ Fashion Summit, launched in 2023, promotes diversity and supports local talents. This year's event saw participation from over 30 African countries, further emphasizing its role in showcasing global fashion diversity.

The Moroccan caftan has gained international recognition, with celebrities embracing the outfit at numerous prestigious events. Recently, it was spotted at the IIFA Awards in Dubai, worn by Indian artist Honey Singh's alleged girlfriend.

However, the rising popularity of Moroccan cultural heritage, including the caftan, has led to concerns about cultural appropriation. In recent years, there have been reported attempts, particularly from Algeria, to co-opt various aspects of Moroccan culture.

These issues have prompted calls for action to protect Morocco's cultural heritage. In April, Moroccan Culture Minister Mehdi Bensaid met with Darren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), to discuss ways to safeguard Morocco's historical and cultural assets.

Tang expressed support for Morocco's right to protect its heritage, including elements like zellige mosaics. "The project we implemented in 2016 in Morocco regarding your famous zellige, in addition to the numerous projects we are currently implementing, will be based on a comprehensive approach to intellectual property," he stated.

As the Moroccan caftan continues to make waves on international platforms like the BRICS+ Fashion Summit, it not only showcases the country's rich cultural heritage but also highlights the ongoing efforts to preserve and protect these unique cultural expressions in an increasingly globalized world.
