In a significant move for the renewable energy sector, Xlinks Limited has appointed Samantha Harrison, a former UK government adviser, as its new Chief Operating Officer (COO). This appointment comes as the company spearheads the groundbreaking Morocco-UK Power Project, an initiative set to revolutionize cross-continental energy transmission.

The project, ambitious in both scale and vision, aims to deliver renewable energy from Morocco to the United Kingdom via a 4,000-kilometer subsea cable. By harnessing solar and wind power in Morocco, complemented by a substantial battery storage facility, the venture is poised to supply 8% of Great Britain's electricity needs, potentially powering up to seven million homes.

Harrison's appointment, reviewed by the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (ACOBA) in late September, was deemed to pose minimal risk of conflict with her previous government roles. Her prior positions included serving as an Expert Adviser at the Department of Health and Social Care and as Interim Permanent Secretary and Chief Operating Officer at 10 Downing Street.

In her new capacity at Xlinks, Harrison will oversee crucial areas including strategic HR, security, culture, technology, digital data, and government & stakeholder relations. To maintain ethical standards and avoid potential conflicts of interest, she has committed to refraining from direct contact with the government in her new role, with such communications to be handled by other Xlinks personnel.

The Morocco-UK Power Project stands at a critical juncture, having applied to the UK's Department for Energy Security and Net Zero for designation as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project. Additionally, Xlinks is seeking a contract for difference to support the project, which, if approved, could be valued in the billions. This potential agreement could establish the project as the largest electricity generation asset in the UK power supply.

As the global push for sustainable energy solutions intensifies, the Morocco-UK Power Project represents a bold step towards cross-border collaboration in renewable energy. With Harrison's expertise and the project's innovative approach, Xlinks is positioning itself at the forefront of international efforts to address climate change and energy security challenges.

The success of this venture could set a precedent for future intercontinental renewable energy projects, potentially reshaping the global energy landscape and accelerating the transition to sustainable power sources.
