Strengthening Bonds: U.S. Commitment to Morocco's Earthquake Recovery Efforts
The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to support Morocco's ongoing recovery efforts following the devastating earthquake that struck the Al Haouz region in September last year. This renewal of support underscores the longstanding friendship between the two nations and highlights the continued international response to natural disasters.
US Ambassador to Morocco, Puneet Talwar, recently visited the affected communities in Al Haouz, where the US Agency for International Development (USAID) is collaborating with UNICEF to bolster local recovery initiatives. The visit aimed to assess the progress of recovery efforts and reaffirm American support for Morocco's vision of rebuilding and resilience.
During his tour, Ambassador Talwar expressed admiration for the resilience displayed by the local community. "I'm grateful to witness firsthand how USAID and UNICEF are working in partnership with the Moroccan government to support His Majesty King Mohammed VI's vision for recovery," he stated. The ambassador emphasized the inspiring fortitude shown by children, teachers, parents, school leaders, and local associations in the face of adversity.
The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 6.8, resulted in at least 3,000 fatalities, over 5,000 injuries, and left thousands homeless. In response, the United States has provided approximately $12.6 million in initial humanitarian assistance and long-term recovery support since the disaster struck.
As part of the reconstruction efforts, USAID and NGO GiveDirectly have allocated $2 million to provide direct cash grants to more than 220 cooperatives. This initiative, conducted in collaboration with the National Initiative for Human Development, has enabled local cooperatives to purchase essential equipment, replenish livestock, and acquire farming supplies crucial for economic recovery.
Morocco's domestic response has also been significant. Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch reported in September that construction work had covered 449,632 housing units, with 555,000 construction permits issued. More recently, King Mohammed VI instructed the government to extend emergency aid for rehabilitating damaged homes by five months, allowing families additional time to complete necessary repairs.
The ongoing support from the United States not only aids in the physical reconstruction of affected areas but also reinforces the diplomatic ties between the two countries. As Ambassador Talwar noted, "The United States is proud to stand with them and with Morocco, our oldest friend, as they continue to rebuild their communities even stronger."
This collaborative effort between Morocco and the United States serves as a model for international cooperation in disaster recovery, demonstrating how long-standing diplomatic relationships can translate into tangible support during times of crisis. As Morocco continues to rebuild, the enduring partnership with the United States remains a crucial component in the journey towards full recovery and increased resilience against future challenges.
