Morocco Bolsters Maritime Influence with IMO Council Vice-Presidency

Morocco has taken a significant step in strengthening its position in global maritime affairs, as highlighted by a recent high-level meeting between Moroccan Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita and International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez in Rabat.

The meeting, which took place on Friday, marked Dominguez's first official visit to Morocco since his election as IMO Secretary-General in 2023. It also represented the first time an IMO Secretary-General has visited an African or Arab country in this capacity, underscoring the growing importance of Morocco in international maritime circles.

Central to the discussions was Morocco's current role as vice-president of the IMO Council, a position that reflects the country's increasing influence in shaping global maritime policies. This leadership role comes in the wake of Morocco's recent re-election to the IMO Council in "Category C" for the 2024-2025 term, marking its 16th consecutive election since joining the organization in 1962.
