Morocco's Electrifying Surge: Power Production Rises 3% by April's End
In a remarkable stride towards energy self-sufficiency, Morocco's electricity production increased by 3% by the end of April 2024, marking a stark contrast to the 1.9% decline recorded a year prior, according to data from the Directorate of Financial Studies and Forecasts (DEPF).
This surge in power generation can be attributed to the robust performance of private producers, whose output rose by an impressive 4.2%, coupled with a significant 38.6% spike in renewable energy production under the auspices of Law 13-09.
However, the DEPF's report presents a contrasting picture for the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), whose production levels dipped by a substantial 9.9% during the same period.
Examining Morocco's energy trade dynamics, the volume of imported electricity soared by 15.1% during the first four months of 2024, a noteworthy shift from the staggering 119.6% increase witnessed in the corresponding period last year.
On the export front, Morocco's outbound electricity volume climbed by 17.9%, buoyed by a 3% rise in net energy demand, following a 3.4% uptick in the previous year.
Focusing on domestic consumption, the nation's electricity usage saw a modest 0.7% increase by the end of April 2024, a far cry from the robust 6% growth registered the year before. This increase was driven by a 10% surge in medium-voltage energy sales, a 3% uptick in sales to distributors, and a 1.9% rise in low-voltage consumption.
As Morocco continues to forge ahead on its path towards sustainable energy independence, this surge in power production not only underscores the nation's unwavering commitment to renewable sources but also serves as a testament to its resilience in navigating the ever-evolving global energy landscape.
