In a catastrophic turn of events, a deadly blaze erupted at an ammunition depot in Chad's capital, N'Djamena, unleashing powerful explosions that illuminated the night sky and sent shockwaves rippling through the city. Senior government ministers have confirmed casualties, both fatalities and injuries, in this tragic incident.

Foreign Minister Abderaman Koulamallah disclosed that the fire started at a military depot in the Goudji area—a strategic location housing the country's primary arsenal. It is situated in the northern part of the capital, near the military headquarters, a French army base, and the airport.

President Mahamat Idriss Déby, in a somber message, extended condolences to the victims and their families without specifying the exact number of casualties. This reflects the gravity and uncertainty surrounding the unfolding crisis.

Unverified video footage has emerged showing harrowing scenes of blasts lighting up the night sky. Witnesses reported hearing deafening explosions from miles away, shaking nearby structures.

Journalists from the AFP news agency described a chilling scene on the ground, where the raging fire caused weapons to discharge into the air. This created a terrifying spectacle of "explosions of ammunition of all calibres," as corroborated by a French official requesting anonymity.

Residents of N'Djamena painted a vivid picture of the chaos that ensued. One eyewitness recounted seeing three wounded individuals on the street, while another tragically lost a neighbor to the devastating blasts. "Loud blasts woke us up," said Moustapha Adoum Mahamat. "Our house was shaking as if someone were shooting at us. Then we saw a big fire at the military camp and smoke and things exploding in the air. We could see artillery fly over us."

In the aftermath of this calamity, Foreign Minister Koulamallah urged the public to remain calm. President Déby took to Facebook after midnight, expressing profound sorrow: "Peace to the souls of the victims, sincere condolences to the grieving families, and a speedy recovery to the wounded."

While the cause of the fire remains unknown, President Déby has vowed to initiate a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. It has left a deep scar on the nation's psyche and raised grave concerns about the security and preparedness of Chad's military infrastructure.

As the smoke clears and the nation grapples with the aftermath, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for answers and swift action to prevent such catastrophic incidents from recurring. This is crucial for ensuring the safety of both the Chadian people and the region at large.
