Toxic Haze From Indonesia Forces School Closures Across Malaysia

Toxic Haze From Indonesia Forces School Closures Across Malaysia

Deteriorating air quality linked to Indonesian forest and peatland fires has forced Malaysian authorities to close schools in several parts of the country, including Kuala Lumpur, highlighting the growing cross-border impact of the region’s prolonged haze crisis.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced the closures on Friday, confirming that measures had been implemented across five states and two federal territories. She instructed education officials at state and district levels to monitor pollution levels closely and respond immediately whenever conditions required further action.

The minister acknowledged that school closures disrupt family routines and create difficulties for working parents. She also pledged that future closure decisions would be communicated in advance whenever possible, allowing families more time to make alternative arrangements.

Indonesian Fires Drive Regional Pollution

The latest deterioration in Malaysia’s air quality comes after months of fires affecting extensive areas of forests and peatlands in Indonesia, particularly on Borneo, Sumatra and Papua.

The resulting haze has spread beyond Indonesia’s borders, affecting neighbouring Malaysia and Singapore. On Borneo, pollution has also contributed to school closures and tens of thousands of reported cases of acute respiratory infections, according to the information provided in the report.

The situation illustrates the regional consequences of fires that generate large volumes of smoke, with pollution crossing national boundaries and disrupting education and public health well beyond the areas where the fires originate.

Kuala Lumpur Records Unhealthy Air Quality

Air pollution remained at unhealthy levels in Kuala Lumpur throughout the week, according to Swiss air-quality monitoring company IQAir.

On Friday, the Malaysian capital recorded an Air Pollution Index (API) reading of approximately 170. IQAir also placed Kuala Lumpur among the world's most polluted cities that day, behind neighbouring Singapore.

The figures have intensified attention on the thresholds used by Malaysian authorities to determine when pollution becomes severe enough to require protective measures, including the suspension of in-person classes.

Malaysia's King Calls for Action at High Pollution Levels

Malaysia's King, Sultan Ibrahim, addressed the issue on Thursday, stating that schools should close when the air pollution index reaches 150 or above.

Under Malaysia's guidelines, an API reading exceeding 200 is classified as unhealthy, while levels above 300 are considered hazardous. An index above 500 constitutes the threshold for declaring a local emergency.

The difference between the threshold cited by the King and the higher classifications in the national guidelines highlights the importance of timely decisions as pollution levels fluctuate. School closures remain one of the measures available to reduce children's exposure during periods of deteriorating air quality.

Public Health and Education Under Pressure

The haze crisis presents authorities with a difficult balance between protecting students and limiting disruption to families. Prolonged school closures can complicate childcare arrangements and interrupt classroom learning, while exposure to polluted air can pose significant respiratory risks.

Fadhlina Sidek's commitment to improving advance notification reflects the practical challenges faced by households when schools must close at short notice.

As Indonesian fires continue to affect air quality across the region, Malaysia's response will depend on pollution monitoring, timely public warnings and coordination between education authorities and agencies responsible for environmental and public health protection.

The episode also underscores the need for sustained efforts to address forest and peatland fires at their source, given that their effects extend beyond national borders and can disrupt daily life across Southeast Asia.
