Europe demands sanctions against US over Trump’s Greenland threats

European leaders have united in an unusually firm response to President Donald Trump’s escalating threats to seize Greenland through potential military action, with prominent lawmakers pushing for concrete economic countermeasures against Washington rather than mere symbolic support for Denmark.

The crisis sharpened this week after the Trump White House confirmed it is exploring "various options" to acquire the Danish autonomous territory, explicitly stating military intervention remains on the table. This follows a U.S. military operation in Venezuela on January 3 that captured President Nicolás Maduro, heightening European fears of similar moves against a NATO ally.

Danish MEP Per Clausen warned Tuesday that Europe must treat Trump’s ambitions as a genuine threat, urging the EU to suspend trade deals and prepare sanctions until Washington drops its claims. "We have to take him seriously," Clausen told the Anadolu Agency. "He has shown he can carry out military action against a sovereign country, and his threats against Greenland are very specific." Austrian Vice-Chancellor Andreas Babler echoed this, calling for "harsh sanctions" on U.S. tech firms and punitive tariffs on American agricultural goods. French MEP Raphaël Glucksmann went further, suggesting Europe establish a permanent military presence in Greenland to signal collective resolve.

European Council President António Costa delivered the EU’s sternest rebuke Wednesday during Cyprus’s rotating presidency handover, stating "Greenland belongs to its people" and warning the Union "cannot accept violations of international law" whether in "Cyprus, Latin America, Greenland, Ukraine, or Gaza." Costa stressed decisions on Greenland require Denmark or Greenland’s consent and pledged the territory full EU "support and solidarity." Leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom joined Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in a joint statement defending Greenland’s sovereignty. Frederiksen cautioned that U.S. military action against a NATO member would end "everything," including the alliance and post-World War II security arrangements.

Despite unified rhetoric, European officials remain cautious about directly confronting Trump amid ongoing Ukraine postwar security talks. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced next week’s meetings with Danish and Greenlandic officials but gave no sign Washington will soften its stance. A January 2025 poll showed 85 percent of Greenlanders oppose joining the United States.
