Danish and Greenlandic leaders meet Vance amid Trump annexation push

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt held crucial talks Wednesday at the White House with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Greenland's future. The meeting followed hours after President Donald Trump declared any scenario short of U.S. control over the Arctic territory "unacceptable." Analysts described the summit as potentially the most significant in modern Danish history, amid escalating rhetoric from the Trump administration.

In a morning Truth Social post, Trump insisted the United States needs Greenland for national security reasons and called the island "vital to the Golden Dome we're building," referencing his proposed missile defense initiative. The day before the Washington meeting, Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen firmly rebuffed U.S. overtures during a joint press conference in Copenhagen with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. "One thing must be clear to everyone: Greenland does not want to belong to the United States, does not want to be governed by the United States, does not want to be part of the United States," Nielsen stated.

He added that if forced to choose between the U.S. and Denmark, "we choose Denmark. We choose NATO. We choose the Kingdom of Denmark. We choose the EU." Trump brushed off the comments, telling reporters Tuesday, "I disagree with him. I don't know who he is. I know nothing about him. But it's going to be a big problem for him."

European allies rallied behind Denmark and Greenland. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced Wednesday that France will open a consulate in Greenland on February 6, calling it a "political signal" to strengthen ties with the Arctic territory, following President Emmanuel Macron's visit there last summer. "Attacking another NATO member makes no sense; it would even go against U.S. interests," Barrot said on RTL radio. "So this blackmail must obviously stop."

Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen revealed plans to bolster military presence on Greenland, consulting allies on increased NATO activity in the Arctic, including reinforcements to existing garrisons and more patrols in strategic areas. In Washington, bipartisan opposition emerged in Congress: Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Lisa Murkowski introduced a bill barring Defense or State Department funds for annexing Greenland or any NATO territory without consent. Post-White House, the Danish and Greenlandic ministers planned meetings with the Arctic Caucus senators. Greenland's five parliamentary parties issued a joint statement last week: "We don't want to be American, we don't want to be Danish, we want to be Greenlandic."
