Trump announces further measures to address rising diesel prices

US President Donald Trump has signalled further measures to address rising diesel prices, announcing that his administration will make a major statement on the fuel market. Speaking during an event at the White House, Trump said the government was preparing a significant announcement, following recent steps to ease restrictions on diesel use and temporarily suspend certain federal fuel taxes.

The planned announcement comes as high fuel costs continue to place pressure on American households, businesses and transport operators. Diesel is particularly important to freight transportation, agriculture and construction, meaning sustained price increases can affect the cost of moving goods and delivering essential services.

Trump has argued that the rise in fuel prices is not primarily linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. Instead, he has pointed to Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries and the closure of several refineries in US states as factors contributing to supply pressures. These explanations reflect the president's assessment of the market, while fuel prices can also be influenced by global crude oil prices, refining capacity, distribution costs and seasonal demand.

Earlier in the week, Trump signed an executive order temporarily allowing red-dyed diesel to be used on public roads. The measure also provides for a temporary suspension of federal fuel taxes under the administration's emergency response to elevated prices.

Red-dyed diesel is traditionally reserved for off-road uses, including agricultural machinery and construction equipment. Because it is generally used outside the public road system, it is exempt from road-related taxes that apply to conventional diesel. The temporary relaxation allows eligible supplies to be used more broadly, including on public roads, through the end of the year.

The policy is intended to increase flexibility in the fuel market and provide some relief to users facing higher operating costs. However, the extent to which it will reduce prices for motorists and commercial operators will depend on supply conditions, distribution practices and the implementation of the temporary rules.

US diesel prices reportedly reached a record high of $6.50 per gallon on September 22, before falling to approximately $6.27 per gallon at the time of the report. A US gallon is equivalent to about 3.8 litres. Despite the decline from the peak, prices remain a significant concern for industries that rely heavily on diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.

Trump's forthcoming announcement is expected to build on the administration's recent interventions, although the specific details of the additional measures have not yet been provided in the information available. The impact of the policy will depend on its final terms and whether it can improve fuel affordability without creating further pressure elsewhere in the market.
