Trump Amplifies Controversial Video Criticizing Netanyahu

Donald Trump has shared a provocative video featuring strong criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom the video refers to as a "deep, dark son of a bitch." This post follows Netanyahu’s recent claims of a "very friendly" conversation with Trump regarding hostage negotiations and policies in Syria.

The video, shared on Trump's social media platform, features economist Jeffrey Sachs accusing Netanyahu of influencing U.S. foreign policy to fuel prolonged conflicts in the Middle East. In the video, Sachs alleges that since 1995, Netanyahu has pursued a strategy targeting the governments of Iraq, Iran, and Syria to weaken groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. Sachs attributes the persistence of such policies to the influence of pro-Israel lobbying groups in the United States.

Trump’s motivation for sharing the video remains unclear. Historically, he has used social media to critique Washington’s policies, but this post emerges amidst international efforts led by Egypt, Qatar, and the U.S. to negotiate a ceasefire, including hostage releases.

The move aligns with Trump’s ongoing selection of officials who are perceived as hardline supporters of Israel. His choices for key positions include Marco Rubio as secretary of state, who opposes a Gaza ceasefire and advocates for dismantling Hamas, and Elise Stefanik as UN ambassador, who has criticized the UN for alleged bias against Israel. Trump’s pick for ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, dismisses the concept of Palestinian territories, and defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth has drawn attention for his crusader-themed tattoos and evangelical views.

Trump has issued a stark warning to Hamas, asserting there will be "hell to pay" if hostages are not released before he assumes office. In Gaza, approximately 100 hostages remain captive after 15 months of conflict, with two-thirds believed to be alive. The war has caused over 45,000 Palestinian deaths and displaced millions, who now endure harsh winter conditions.

Despite a historically symbiotic but occasionally strained relationship, Trump’s return to power could bolster Netanyahu’s policies, including settlement expansion in the West Bank. Netanyahu benefited from Trump’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights and the Abraham Accords during Trump’s first term, although their ties soured after Netanyahu congratulated Joe Biden on his 2020 election victory.

Economist Jeffrey Sachs clarified that he is not advising Trump but expressed hope that the video signals a shift in U.S. foreign policy, distancing it from Netanyahu’s "cruel and ineffective" strategies.
