Police shooting in Toulon leaves passenger critically injured

A serious incident involving law enforcement occurred on Wednesday evening in the western part of Toulon, southern France. During a routine traffic stop, police officers attempted to stop a vehicle following a reported traffic violation. The driver refused to comply and tried to flee the scene.

According to judicial authorities, the situation escalated when the vehicle reportedly struck one of the officers during the escape attempt. In response, two police officers discharged their service weapons toward the vehicle. A female passenger inside the car was critically injured and required emergency surgery during the night.

The driver, who was later found to be under the influence of alcohol, abandoned the vehicle a short distance away and attempted to escape on foot. He was quickly arrested and placed in police custody. He faces multiple charges, including aggravated refusal to comply, endangering others, and attempted violence against a law enforcement officer.

An internal police investigation has been opened to determine whether the use of firearms was justified under the circumstances. The two officers involved have also been taken into custody as part of the judicial process. Authorities stated that several investigations are ongoing to clarify the exact sequence of events.
