Türkiye's population surpasses 86 million in 2025
Türkiye's population exceeded 86 million in 2025, according to official data, marking an annual increase of over 427,000 people. The growth was accompanied by a slightly higher number of men than women, with males accounting for 50.02% of the population.
Istanbul remains the country's largest city, with 15.75 million residents, followed by Ankara with 5.9 million, Izmir at 4.5 million, Bursa at 3.26 million, and Antalya with 2.77 million inhabitants. The data also shows an ongoing trend of urbanization, with 93.6% of the population living in provincial and district centers, while the share of people in towns and villages dropped to 6.4%.
The country’s median age rose to 34.9, reflecting gradual population aging. Meanwhile, the total age dependency ratio, which measures the proportion of children and elderly relative to the working-age population, fell slightly to 46%. These shifts indicate demographic changes that may influence labor markets, healthcare planning, and social services in Türkiye in the coming years.
