Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita's recent visit to Washington, D.C., marked a significant moment in international relations, particularly in the context of U.S.-Moroccan ties. This unannounced trip, involving meetings with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, highlights Morocco's proactive approach amid a shifting geopolitical landscape.

Responding to Regional Instability

The backdrop of Bourita's visit is critical geopolitical instability in the Maghreb and Sahel regions, largely attributed to Algeria’s confrontational foreign policy. For decades, Algeria's stance has fostered enduring conflicts, particularly with Morocco. In light of President Trump's return to office, Morocco seeks to solidify its position and capitalize on renewed U.S. support, especially concerning its sovereignty over Sahara.
