Gabon dissolves national football team after CAN 2025 failure
The Gabonese government has reportedly dissolved the national football team’s coaching staff and suspended the team following a disappointing performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Gabon finished last in their group after losing all three matches, including a defeat against Ivory Coast. According to local media, interim Sports Minister Dr. Simplice-Désiré Mamboula announced the decision, which also reportedly includes sidelining key players such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bruno Ecuele Manga. The announcement was briefly published on social media before being deleted.
The state’s intervention comes after President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema expressed concerns about the team’s structural weaknesses, citing a lack of methodology and scattered resources as key issues affecting performance.
Aubameyang responded to criticisms on social media, stating that the team’s problems are “much deeper than the small person that I am,” before leaving Morocco to return to France earlier than planned.
