Kuwait suspends Taraweeh prayers over security concerns during Ramadan

Kuwait has announced the suspension of nightly Taraweeh prayers during the holy month of Ramadan due to security concerns linked to rising regional tensions. The decision, issued by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, applies to all mosques across the country and will remain in effect until further notice.

Authorities confirmed that the five daily obligatory prayers will continue to be held in mosques, while the extended Taraweeh prayers — traditionally performed after the evening prayer during Ramadan — have been temporarily halted. Officials cited recent security developments in the region as the primary reason for the precautionary measure.

Taraweeh prayers hold deep spiritual significance during Ramadan, drawing large congregations each night for extended communal worship. The suspension reflects the government’s effort to reduce large gatherings at a time considered sensitive from a security standpoint.

In contrast, other countries in the region have maintained nightly prayers. In the United Arab Emirates, worshippers gathered at major mosques, including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, to observe Taraweeh. Similarly, mosques in Jordan continued hosting Ramadan prayers without interruption.

The differing approaches highlight how governments are assessing security risks in light of recent geopolitical tensions. Kuwait’s decision underscores how regional instability can directly affect religious life during one of the most significant periods of the Islamic calendar.
