US signals NATO frustration over Iran war stance

Marco Rubio arrived in Helsingborg for a two-day meeting of NATO foreign ministers carrying a message from the United States president that the alliance is deeply dissatisfied with its response to the conflict involving Iran. The gathering brings together allies at a moment of rising friction over military commitments, burden sharing, and future cooperation within the alliance framework.

US officials conveyed that the president considers several NATO members insufficiently supportive of the US and Israeli campaign against Iran. The administration has linked this dissatisfaction to broader questions about the role of the alliance in future crises and whether current members are meeting expectations during active conflicts. The remarks come after months of growing tension between Washington and European capitals over strategic priorities.

Discussions at the meeting also focus on defense spending and force readiness across the alliance. US defense officials have briefed NATO counterparts in Brussels on potential adjustments to the NATO force structure model, including reduced reliance on American contributions in crisis planning. Washington has already begun scaling back parts of its military presence in Europe, including the withdrawal of thousands of troops and the cancellation of planned deployments in Poland.

European allies are seeking clarity on the long-term direction of US policy toward NATO as uncertainty grows over future commitments. The upcoming NATO leaders’ summit in Ankara is expected to address these concerns directly, with calls for renewed unity and stronger coordination. Turkish officials have urged members to reinforce cohesion as internal disagreements intensify over defense responsibilities and the alliance’s response to global conflicts.
