Morocco launches digital hub in New York to harness AI for sustainable development

Morocco officially launched the “Morocco Digital Hub for Sustainable Development” (D4SD) on Friday in New York, aiming to accelerate digital transformation in Africa and the Arab region. The initiative, aligned with HM King Mohammed VI’s vision, was presented in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform.

The launch took place during the 80th UN General Assembly and was attended by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, Delegate Minister Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, and Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Omar Hilale. The Hub positions Morocco as a regional and continental catalyst for inclusive and sustainable digital transformation, offering solutions for Arab and African countries.

Akhannouch highlighted that artificial intelligence is a decisive global challenge, and Morocco is committed to leveraging this technology for inclusive and sustainable human development. Seghrouchni emphasized that the Hub reflects Morocco’s determination to make technology a driver of equity, innovation, and opportunities, while ensuring no one is left behind.

The Hub will focus on AI applications in health, education, climate resilience, and governance, while promoting the empowerment of women and youth as digital leaders. A complementary initiative, the AI and Data Science Alliance for Arab States and Africa, will harmonize standards, develop skills, and encourage responsible AI use for sustainable development.

Through this project, Morocco reinforces its leadership in South-South cooperation for digital transformation and aligns with the UN Secretary-General’s roadmap for digital cooperation, UNDP’s global digital strategy, and the digital agendas of the African Union and Arab League.
