Morocco faces rising concerns over insect proliferation outbreaks

The spread of insects across several Moroccan cities has triggered growing concern among residents and local authorities. Reports from different regions describe unusual waves of flying insects, including mosquitoes, appearing in public spaces. Videos shared from Béni Mellal show dense swarms affecting daily life, while Casablanca records a sharp rise in complaints linked to mosquitoes and cockroaches in residential districts such as Aïn Sebaâ, Hay Hassani, and the old medina.

Municipal services in Casablanca have intensified disinfection and mosquito control operations through public cleaning agencies. These interventions now target parks, markets, and coastal areas during the warmer season. Authorities link part of the problem to stagnant water accumulating in underground structures and poorly drained urban zones, which provide ideal breeding conditions for larvae. A public hotline has been activated to allow residents to report infestation sites for faster intervention.

Experts attribute the phenomenon to rapid weather fluctuations combining rainfall, heat, and humidity. These conditions accelerate insect reproduction cycles and increase survival rates during warmer periods. The situation also extends beyond urban discomfort, as agricultural pests such as the Boufaroua mite threaten date palm production by damaging fruit quality. Higher temperatures and lower humidity levels have been identified as key drivers of its spread.

Scientific research is exploring plant based solutions to reduce dependence on chemical pesticides. Extracts from rosemary and nettle have shown strong effectiveness against agricultural parasites, reaching high mortality rates in controlled studies. These natural compounds act on the nervous system of insects and mites, reducing their ability to survive and reproduce. Citizens are also encouraged to reduce stagnant water, improve household hygiene, and use physical barriers such as window screens to limit indoor infestation risks.
