Nike unveils groundbreaking technologies to redefine athletic performance

Nike has introduced a series of revolutionary innovations aimed at reclaiming its leadership in sportswear innovation under the ambitious strategy of CEO Elliott Hill. The announcement reveals four transformative technologies, including the world's first motorized running shoes, neuroscience-based footwear, advanced Olympic apparel, and sustainable cooling fabrics.

A unified innovation engine and motorized footwear

As part of its restructuring, Nike launched the "NIKE, Inc. Sport Offense," uniting the research and development teams of Nike, Jordan Brand, and Converse into a single entity focused on athlete-centric innovation. This initiative also unveiled Project Amplify, the world's first powered footwear system designed to enhance running and walking performance.

Developed in partnership with robotics company Dephy, Project Amplify integrates a lightweight motor, drive belt, and rechargeable battery into carbon-fiber plated running shoes. Dubbed as providing a “second set of calf muscles,” the system is designed for everyday runners, promising to make uphill terrain feel as flat as a track. Over 400 athletes tested the innovation during its development, accumulating more than 2.4 million steps. The footwear is expected to hit the market in the coming years.

Michael Donaghu, Nike’s VP of Create The Future, Emerging Sport and Innovation, stated, "Project Amplify began with a single question: What if we could help athletes move faster and farther with less energy and more enjoyment?"

Neuroscience-inspired footwear

Nike also introduced Mind 001 and Mind 002, its first-ever neuroscience-based shoes. These models feature 22 independent foam nodules per shoe, designed to stimulate sensory receptors and boost concentration. Developed by Nike’s new Mind Science division, the shoes will launch in January 2026, priced at $90 and $145 respectively.

Sustainable innovations for global competitions

The Therma-FIT Air Milano jacket, designed for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, showcases Nike's adaptive A.I.R. (Adapt. Inflate. Regulate.) technology. This allows users to adjust warmth levels in real time by inflating or deflating air compartments within the jacket. The garment provides heat ranging from a hoodie to a mid-weight down jacket.

Additionally, Nike unveiled Aero-FIT, a cooling fabric designed to combat rising global temperatures. Debuting in football gear during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Aero-FIT offers double the airflow of previous materials and is the first elite-performance fabric made entirely from chemically recycled textile waste.

A bold vision under new leadership

These innovations signify Nike’s most comprehensive product reveal in years and mark a pivotal moment in its "Win Now" strategy. After six consecutive quarters of declining revenue and losing market share to competitors like On and Hoka, Elliott Hill returned from retirement in September 2024 to spearhead the company's turnaround.

Hill’s strategy emphasizes a return to Nike’s athletic roots. "By uniting our creative teams across Nike, Jordan, and Converse, we’re accelerating progress to deliver epic products that enhance athletes’ performance," said Phil McCartney, Nike’s Head of Innovation, Design, and Products. The restructuring involves nearly 1,000 designers working in Nike’s state-of-the-art innovation facilities spanning one million square feet.

With these advancements, Nike aims to redefine athletic performance while addressing modern challenges like climate change and mental readiness in sports.
