Erdogan warns Israel actions threaten Turkey after regional escalation
Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan told lawmakers that Israel’s military operations in Syria and Lebanon have reached a level that now poses a direct threat to Turkish security. He framed the regional conflict as no longer confined to neighboring states and argued that instability across the border immediately affects Turkey’s national defense priorities.
Speaking to members of the ruling party in parliament, Erdogan said the security perimeter of Turkey extends far beyond its southern border. He linked Turkish security to developments in Aleppo, Damascus and Beirut, arguing that events in these cities are inseparable from stability inside Turkey itself. He also warned against Israeli activity in the eastern Mediterranean, saying any violation of Turkish or Turkish Cypriot rights would trigger a firm response from Ankara.
The remarks intensified already high tensions between Turkey and Israel, two regional powers with sharply diverging positions on conflicts across the Middle East. Turkey has already severed trade ties with Israel and remains one of the most outspoken critics of its military campaigns in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria, accusing Israel of undermining regional peace and stability.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded within hours, calling Erdogan an antisemitic dictator and accusing him of supporting militant groups and suppressing domestic opposition. He rejected Erdogan’s criticism and said the Turkish leader had no authority to lecture Israel on security matters. The exchange echoed previous verbal clashes between the two leaders during periods of heightened regional violence.
The confrontation comes ahead of a major NATO gathering scheduled in Ankara, where allied leaders are expected to discuss security coordination. The timing adds diplomatic sensitivity, as Turkey seeks to project leadership within the alliance while managing escalating tensions with Israel that could complicate discussions on regional stability.
