OpenAI buys $38 billion in cloud capacity from Amazon to boost AI development

SAN FRANCISCO, November 3, 2025 — OpenAI, the U.S. artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT, has signed a landmark agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) worth $38 billion, securing massive computing and storage capacity to fuel the next stage of its AI development.

According to a joint statement released Monday, the deal grants OpenAI long-term access to AWS’s advanced cloud infrastructure, ensuring the company has the resources it needs to continue training and deploying increasingly powerful AI models.

This move comes as part of OpenAI’s broader effort to expand its data processing capabilities and avoid potential limitations caused by global demand for high-performance computing power.

Industry experts see the agreement as a strategic alignment between two of the biggest players in the tech world. AWS, Amazon’s cloud division, remains the world’s largest cloud provider, serving major AI developers including Anthropic, Stability AI, and Hugging Face.

With this deal, OpenAI strengthens its computing foundation amid intensifying competition in the artificial intelligence sector, where access to GPUs, cloud servers, and data storage has become critical to maintaining innovation speed.

Neither company disclosed specific technical details, but the agreement reflects a growing trend among AI firms to secure exclusive access to large-scale cloud resources, ensuring stability and scalability for model training.

The partnership reinforces OpenAI’s ambition to lead the AI revolution responsibly while sustaining the computational demands of products like ChatGPT, DALL·E, and GPT-powered enterprise tools.
