OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads and tests dedicated Ads Manager

OpenAI advances its monetization strategy through ChatGPT ads. The company now tests an Ads Manager dashboard that enables marketers to launch, track, and refine campaigns in real time. This development addresses early challenges in OpenAI's advertising operations as ad volume grows across the platform.

Advertisers in the test phase currently receive weekly CSV files detailing clicks, impressions, and other metrics. Industry observers found the manual reporting amusing for a leading AI firm, but expect rapid improvements with the full dashboard rollout. The minimum spend for early partners reached $200,000, signaling serious commitment to proving return on investment.

Ad visibility has increased significantly since initial tests. Users once described spotting ChatGPT ads as rare as Bigfoot sightings, mainly on free accounts. Recent checks show frequent appearances, with some precisely targeted by query context like travel ads after vacation planning prompts while others use broader relevance. OpenAI began U.S. ad testing in January 2026 for logged-in free users and the new $8/month "Go" tier, which offers expanded messaging and image generation. Paid Plus ($20/month), Pro ($200/month), and Enterprise plans remain ad-free. Ads appear clearly labeled as "sponsored" below responses, with assurances they neither influence ChatGPT outputs nor involve user data sales. Users can disable personalization, and ads avoid sensitive topics like health or politics.

The Ads Manager promises self-serve tools akin to Google Ads or Meta's platforms. Early click-through rates lag behind search advertising benchmarks, prompting OpenAI to refine targeting and measurement. Integration with partners like Shopify hints at e-commerce expansion, positioning ChatGPT as a conversational ad channel. As AI assistants gain search share, marketers eye visibility within these responses alongside traditional platforms.

This shift opens new revenue streams amid high operational costs. OpenAI balances user experience by isolating ads visually and maintaining response integrity. Global rollout follows U.S. tests, with format and pricing standards still evolving based on partner feedback.
