US greenlights $5.58 billion fighter jet sale to Philippines
The U.S. State Department has approved a $5.58 billion sale of 20 F-16 fighter jets and related equipment to the Philippines, a treaty ally of the United States. This deal is intended to strengthen the security of the Philippines, which plays a vital role in political stability, peace, and economic progress in Southeast Asia.
The sale will enhance the Philippine Air Force’s maritime domain awareness capabilities and improve its ability to suppress enemy air defenses. This move comes amid escalating tensions between the Philippines and China in the South China Sea, a region claimed almost entirely by China despite an international ruling that refutes its claim.
The deal will become official after a signed agreement is received from the Philippines. However, the Philippine defense spokesperson stated that no official notice had been received yet. In response, China warned the Philippines that such a purchase could destabilize regional peace.
The Philippines has been strengthening its defense cooperation with the U.S. since President Ferdinand Marcos took office in 2022, particularly as Manila resists China's claims in the South China Sea. In December, the Philippines angered China by announcing plans to acquire the U.S. Typhon missile system to protect its maritime interests.
In recent developments, the U.S. has shifted its military focus to Asia in response to China’s rising power and the tensions surrounding Taiwan. The Philippines has made it clear that it would be involved in any potential conflict over Taiwan, given its geographical proximity.
