Grok downloads fall as rivals widen artificial intelligence lead
Grok, the chatbot developed by xAI, recorded a sharp decline in global adoption during 2026 as competition in the generative artificial intelligence market intensified. Monthly downloads dropped to around 8.3 million in April, down from more than 20 million in January, representing a fall of nearly 60 percent. Active usage also weakened, with average daily users decreasing from 13.9 million in March to 12.2 million in April. In the United States, daily users fell from about 14 million to 11 million over the same period.
The platform also lost ground in global rankings. Grok, which began 2026 as the second most popular AI chatbot worldwide, slipped to fifth place by April. It was overtaken by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek. Web traffic followed the same direction, falling from 10.5 million daily visits in March to 9.3 million in April. Market share data shows a widening gap, with ChatGPT holding roughly 77 percent of global chatbot traffic, followed by Gemini at 9 percent and Perplexity near 8 percent.
Monetization remains a structural weakness. A survey of more than 260,000 people in the United States found that only 0.174 percent paid for Grok services in the second quarter of 2026, almost unchanged from the previous year. By comparison, more than 6 percent reported paying for ChatGPT. At the same time, xAI’s infrastructure strategy drew attention after its parent company SpaceX agreed to lease the full computing capacity of its Colossus 1 data center to rival Anthropic, a move that underscored underutilized internal demand.
Several factors appear to explain the slowdown. xAI restricted access to key features, including shifting image generation tools behind a $30 monthly subscription and tightening free-tier limits without clear communication. User complaints increased across online forums. While Grok lost momentum, competitors accelerated. Gemini’s web traffic rose 575 percent year on year and Claude increased 761 percent, with Claude also posting the fastest quarterly user growth among major chatbots at 14 percent, ahead of Gemini at 12 percent.
