Turkish ambassador meets Nigerian defense minister in Abuja

Türkiye’s ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, held talks with Nigeria’s defense minister, Christopher Musa, in Abuja to explore avenues for expanding cooperation in defense and security.

According to a statement issued by the Turkish Embassy, the discussions centered on strengthening bilateral ties in key strategic areas, including military training programs, defense industry collaboration, counterterrorism initiatives and institutional capacity building.

Both sides highlighted the importance of deepening technical cooperation and enhancing expertise-sharing mechanisms within the defense sector. The meeting reflects growing engagement between Türkiye and Nigeria, two countries that have sought to broaden their partnership across economic, political and security domains in recent years.

Defense cooperation has become an increasingly prominent pillar of Ankara’s foreign policy in Africa. Through training exchanges, equipment partnerships and joint initiatives, Türkiye aims to support regional stability while reinforcing diplomatic ties. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, continues to face security challenges ranging from insurgency to organized crime, making international defense collaboration a strategic priority.

Officials from both countries reaffirmed their commitment to sustained dialogue and practical cooperation designed to strengthen security frameworks and promote long-term stability.
