United States condemns Polisario attack on Es-Smara

The United States has strongly condemned a recent attack claimed by the Polisario Front against the city of Es-Smara, located in the Moroccan Sahara, which resulted in injuries to a civilian.

In an official statement, the U.S. mission to the United Nations described the incident as an act of violence that threatens regional stability and undermines ongoing efforts toward peace. The statement emphasized that such actions are incompatible with recent diplomatic discussions aimed at resolving long-standing tensions in the region.

According to local reports, a woman was injured after being struck by projectiles fired near a detention facility in Es-Smara. Security forces and civil protection teams were quickly deployed to secure the area and investigate the circumstances of the attack.

The United States reaffirmed its position that lasting peace in the region requires constructive engagement from all parties involved. It also referenced United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which highlights the Moroccan autonomy proposal as a potential framework for resolving the dispute over Sahara.

Washington called on all actors who oppose the peace process to return to negotiations and support a stable and cooperative future. The statement also stressed that maintaining the current status quo is no longer a viable option.

Security experts note that tensions in the region have periodically escalated in recent years, with sporadic incidents contributing to ongoing diplomatic sensitivity in the area.
