OpenAI Under Investigation for ChatGPT User Protection
The regulation of artificial intelligence technologies has reached a new stage in the United States. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is now subject to an information request from a coalition of attorneys general from several U.S. states. Their concerns primarily focus on the protection mechanisms in place for the most vulnerable users, particularly minors and the elderly.
According to several American media outlets, this initiative is led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, acting on behalf of multiple jurisdictions engaged in a thorough examination of the practices of the generative artificial intelligence company.
Protecting Sensitive Audiences at the Heart of Concerns
The authorities are seeking to better understand how data related to the use of ChatGPT is collected, processed, and protected. Questions also revolve around the preventive measures intended to limit potential risks for young internet users and individuals who may be more exposed to problematic uses of AI-based conversational tools.
In response to this initiative, OpenAI has stated that it takes the concerns raised by American prosecutors seriously. The company claims to be willing to collaborate with authorities to address information requests and explain the security measures already implemented.
The group notably emphasizes that it has strengthened its protection mechanisms for minor users in recent months, as well as for individuals showing signs of psychological distress during their interactions with its services.
Increasing Regulatory Pressure
This investigation comes amid heightened vigilance from American authorities regarding artificial intelligence actors. As these technologies see rapid adoption across various sectors, issues related to user protection, the reliability of generated content, and platform accountability are gaining prominence in public debate.
In early June, the Florida Attorney General had already initiated proceedings against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, concerning concerns related to the safety of young users.
At the same time, several American families have taken legal action against certain conversational AI platforms, claiming that their relatives were exposed to problematic interactions. These proceedings have contributed to increasing attention to the safeguards deployed by companies in the sector.
Tech Giants Called to Strengthen Their Controls
The pressure is not solely on OpenAI. At the end of last year, a coalition of attorneys from 42 states and territories sent a collective request to several major tech companies to enhance control procedures and security mechanisms integrated into their artificial intelligence models.
This new initiative confirms the emergence of a more structured oversight framework around generative AI. As conversational tools continue to gain traction among the general public, authorities are seeking to balance technological innovation with the protection of the most vulnerable users.
The ongoing investigation could thus help define new regulatory expectations for the entire artificial intelligence industry in the United States.
