United States eases sanctions on Iranian oil sales following Switzerland talks
The United States has issued a temporary waiver allowing limited Iranian oil sales, marking a notable shift in sanctions policy following recent diplomatic discussions held in Switzerland.
According to official statements, the U.S. Treasury Department authorized a 60-day general license permitting the production, shipment, and export of Iranian oil. The decision comes after a round of talks described by mediators as “constructive,” involving discussions between Washington and Tehran aimed at reducing regional tensions.
The announcement followed remarks by U.S. officials, including Vice President JD Vance, who indicated progress in negotiations and referenced agreements linked to energy oversight and maritime security. The talks reportedly included commitments related to nuclear inspections under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that the temporary waiver is part of a broader understanding reached during the Switzerland negotiations. He stated that the measure is tied to a memorandum of understanding that includes conditions related to regional security and energy transit.
One of the key points in the discussions is the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global oil shipments passes. Any disruption in the area has historically had immediate effects on global energy markets.
Following the announcement, international oil prices declined, reflecting expectations of increased supply and reduced geopolitical risk. Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate both recorded noticeable drops in early trading after the news became public.
The agreement also includes coordination efforts involving regional mediators such as Qatar and Pakistan, who have played a role in facilitating dialogue between the two sides. These mediators have proposed the creation of a technical committee to oversee implementation of a potential roadmap toward a longer-term agreement within 60 days.
Observers note that while the waiver represents a limited and temporary easing of restrictions, it could signal a broader attempt to stabilize tensions surrounding energy exports and maritime security in the Middle East.
However, the situation remains complex, as other regional actors continue to express differing positions on security arrangements and ongoing conflicts in neighboring areas.
