UK Evacuates Citizens from Lebanon Amid Escalating Violence
The United Kingdom has organized a charter flight for British nationals wishing to leave Lebanon as tensions escalate in the region. This decision comes in response to a volatile situation marked by Israel's recent military actions against Hezbollah.
The flight is scheduled to depart from Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport, with Foreign Secretary David Lammy describing the circumstances as “volatile” and warning of a potential rapid deterioration. Priority will be given to vulnerable individuals, including families with children under 18. Approximately 5,000 British nationals, including their immediate families, are currently in Lebanon, and the UK government is exploring all possible evacuation options.
Israel has initiated a “limited, localized and targeted” ground operation against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, sealing off communities along its northern border. Reports indicate that at least 95 individuals have died due to Israeli airstrikes on Monday alone, according to Lebanon’s health ministry.
Lammy emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “The safety of British nationals in Lebanon continues to be our utmost priority. That’s why the UK government is chartering a flight to help those wanting to leave. It is vital that you leave now as further evacuation may not be guaranteed.” He convened a meeting of the Cobra emergency committee to address the ongoing conflict.
In preparation for potential evacuations, British military assets have been positioned in Cyprus and the eastern Mediterranean. However, officials stress that immediate departure is advisable for Britons still in Lebanon.
Other countries are also taking similar measures. Germany has evacuated non-essential embassy staff and vulnerable nationals while advising its citizens to utilize commercial flights where available. France has had evacuation plans in place for months but has not yet issued an official order. Canada has reserved seats on commercial flights for its citizens, urging them to leave promptly.
Australia has similarly advised its 15,000 citizens in Lebanon to evacuate while Beirut airport remains operational. Meanwhile, Bulgaria successfully evacuated 89 nationals and is discussing further options for those wishing to leave.
As nations scramble to ensure the safety of their citizens amidst rising tensions, Lammy reiterated the importance of immediate action: “We cannot anticipate the circumstances and the speed with which we could do that if things escalate in a major way over the coming hours and days.”
