Gaza Strikes Claim Dozens of Lives Amid Ceasefire Announcement
Israeli airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 82 individuals in Gaza, with reports indicating that over 30 fatalities occurred in Gaza City shortly after the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
One significant attack targeted a house near the Engineers Union Building in northern Gaza City on Wednesday night, leaving at least 18 people dead. In the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood of Gaza City, emergency services recovered 12 bodies.
In central Gaza, an Israeli drone strike hit a gathering in the Karaj area within the Bureij camp, killing five people. The death toll has continued to rise since Wednesday morning, as many Palestinians sought shelter in tents after a brief period of celebration following the ceasefire announcement.
“For a short while, people turned this area into a scene of celebration—a rare sight in a place usually associated with grief and loss,” said a local reporter from central Gaza. However, fears of intensified violence overshadowed the momentary relief, as the ceasefire is scheduled to take effect on Sunday.
Concerns about escalating attacks have been fueled by reports of increased drone strikes and heavy artillery fire. The celebrations quickly subsided as residents braced for further bombardments.
The ceasefire deal, reportedly brokered with conditions including the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the return of displaced individuals to their homes, and an end to hostilities, is set to be implemented in three phases. However, the exact timing of its commencement remains uncertain.
As negotiations continue, Israeli and Hamas representatives are reportedly finalizing details about a prisoner exchange. Over 10,000 Palestinians remain in Israeli detention facilities, including individuals recently detained from Gaza.
