A devastating residential fire in the town of Neuves-Maisons, in northeastern France, left five people dead and one injured early Sunday morning. According to emergency services, firefighters were alerted shortly after 3:15 a.m. when flames broke out in a three-story building that also housed a shop on the ground floor.

Officials confirmed that the victims include a 59-year-old man, a 60-year-old woman, a 20-year-old woman, and a 16-year-old teenager. A fifth individual, initially reported as critically injured, later succumbed to their injuries. Two other people were rescued: a 16-year-old who remains in serious condition and a 21-year-old who suffered minor smoke inhalation.

Around 70 firefighters and thirty vehicles were deployed to contain the blaze, which they managed to bring under control relatively quickly. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the tragedy in this community of approximately 7,000 residents, located southwest of Nancy.
