Renowned Algerian Singer Cheb Khaled Faces Espionage Allegations Amid Moroccan Ties
In a surprising turn of events, Cheb Khaled, the celebrated Algerian singer, finds himself at the center of a brewing controversy. According to recent reports, Algerian authorities are allegedly preparing to charge the artist with espionage on behalf of Morocco, a claim that has sent shockwaves through the North African music scene.
Al Abdou Semmar, founder of the news outlet Algeria Par, revealed on his YouTube channel that a dossier containing "serious allegations" against Khaled has been forwarded from the military court in Blida to the court of Bir Mourad Rais in Algiers. The accusations reportedly stem from Khaled's long-standing friendship with Moroccan King Mohammed VI and his acquisition of Moroccan citizenship in 2013.
The allegations suggest that Khaled may have been involved in transmitting sensitive information classified as "defense secrets" to Moroccan authorities. Furthermore, he is suspected of complicity in espionage activities alongside the Bennacer brothers, sons of the late General Larbi Bennacer.
This development comes against a backdrop of strained relations between Algeria and Morocco, with the former country maintaining a hostile stance towards individuals with close ties to its neighbor. Algeria's support for the Polisario Front, a separatist group challenging Morocco's sovereignty over Sahara, further complicates the geopolitical landscape.
The accusations against Khaled are not isolated incidents. Recent reports indicate that Algerian authorities have arrested two Moroccan nationals in Oran and Sidi Bel Abbès on similar charges of espionage and undermining national interests. An Algerian student has also been accused of spreading false information and attempting to establish a terrorist network online.
Khaled, who currently resides in Luxembourg, has been a prominent figure in both Algerian and Moroccan music scenes. He has repeatedly expressed his affection for Morocco, referring to it as his "second country." In 2013, he received Moroccan citizenship through a royal decree, a move that has been a source of controversy among those critical of Morocco.
When previously questioned about his Moroccan nationality, Khaled defended his decision, stating, "Yes, I have the Moroccan nationality - why would I not have it? You know, I've always felt Moroccan since I was a kid. The borders between the Maghreb countries, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, have never existed for me."
As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, recognizing the potential impact on cultural exchanges and diplomatic relations in the region.
