Israel has announced the release of 110 Palestinian prisoners as part of the ongoing ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement with Hamas. According to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society, the detainees are expected to be freed today in the third phase of the deal.

Simultaneously, eight captives held by Hamas and other Palestinian groups—comprising five Thai nationals and three Israelis—will also be released. Most of the freed Palestinian detainees are anticipated to arrive in Ramallah’s Radana area in the occupied West Bank around midday local time. However, 20 of the released prisoners will be exiled outside Palestine. Among those being released are at least 30 children.

A notable name on the release list is Zakaria Zubeidi, a former Palestinian resistance figure and theatre director. Zubeidi, once a leading figure in the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, gained widespread recognition following his dramatic escape from an Israeli prison in 2021. He and five other inmates tunneled out of a maximum-security facility before being recaptured. Prior to his imprisonment, Zubeidi founded The Freedom Theatre in the Jenin refugee camp, using the arts as a form of cultural resistance against Israeli occupation.

The Jenin refugee camp remains a focal point of Palestinian resistance and has been subjected to frequent Israeli military raids. Israel's ongoing military operation in the camp, now in its second week, has resulted in the deaths of at least 16 Palestinians and injuries to dozens. Israeli forces report having killed 18 and arrested 60 individuals in Jenin and Tulkarem as part of broader operations in the occupied West Bank.

The latest release of prisoners brings the total number of Palestinians freed under the ceasefire agreement to 400. However, Israeli authorities continue to detain more individuals, including 12 Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem, accused of violating restrictions on public celebrations and expressions of solidarity with Hamas.

Despite the ongoing releases, thousands of Palestinians remain in Israeli custody. Prior to this agreement, an estimated 10,400 Palestinians were imprisoned, with over 3,300 held in administrative detention without formal charges or trial. This count excludes detainees captured during Israel's military operations in Gaza, which include medical professionals such as Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital.

According to human rights organizations, Palestinian detainees from Gaza are being held separately in military-run detention centers, primarily in the Naqab desert. Reports from former detainees suggest that torture and ill-treatment of Gaza prisoners have reached unprecedented levels. Palestinian surgeon Dr. Adnan al-Bursh reportedly died in Israeli custody under such conditions.

The prisoner exchanges continue against the backdrop of ongoing violence and military operations, raising concerns about the broader humanitarian situation and the future of detainees in Israeli prisons.
