Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton dies at 79

Oscar-winning American actress Diane Keaton, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1978 for her performance in Annie Hall, has died in California at the age of 79, a family spokesperson told People magazine on Saturday. No further details about the circumstances of her death have been released at this time.

Diane Keaton began her Hollywood career in 1970 with Lovers and Other Strangers. Her long filmography includes her iconic role in The Godfather, where she played Al Pacino’s wife, and several of Woody Allen’s greatest successes. She remained close friends with the New York filmmaker, having long been his partner, muse, and favorite actress.

Her performance in Annie Hall earned her an Oscar in 1978, followed by three more Academy Award nominations for Reds (1981), Marvin’s Room (1996), and Something’s Gotta Give (2003). Keaton continued acting well into her seventies, starring in Book Club (2018) and Poms (2019).

In a 2019 interview with AFP, Keaton said she never thought about aging or retirement: “And if no one calls me anymore, I have plenty of hobbies I love to fill my time.” Never married, she adopted two children and once joked about being “an anomaly.” “Maybe I’m one of the few single women of my age who made movies without getting married,” she laughed, adding, “I’m not unhappy!”

Her final film role came in 2024, when she co-starred in Summer Camp alongside Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard.
