Tangier arrest: Morocco detains French-Algerian suspect wanted by Interpol
Moroccan authorities have arrested a 27-year-old French national of Algerian origin in Tangier after identifying him as the subject of an Interpol Red Notice linked to a fatal shooting in the Paris region in 2024.
The arrest was carried out on Saturday, October 3, by officers from the Tangier judicial police as part of routine checks against international security databases. The verification reportedly established that the suspect was wanted internationally under an arrest warrant issued by French judicial authorities in connection with a case involving intentional homicide.
Suspect linked to 2024 shooting investigation
According to preliminary information from the investigation, French authorities are seeking the man over his alleged involvement in a fatal shooting that occurred in July 2024 on a public road in the Paris metropolitan area.
Investigators reportedly believe the suspect was part of a group involved in a premeditated killing carried out with a firearm. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation by the French authorities.
The international alert was issued through Interpol at the request of the French National Central Bureau in Paris, allowing Moroccan security services to identify the suspect after his details appeared in international security databases.
Extradition process initiated
Following the arrest in Tangier, the suspect was placed under extradition procedures under the supervision of the competent Moroccan prosecutor's office.
The Moroccan National Central Bureau, known as Interpol-Rabat and operating under the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), has notified its French counterpart of the arrest. The next stages will be handled through the judicial and international cooperation mechanisms governing extradition proceedings.
The case highlights the role of international police cooperation in tracking individuals wanted across borders, particularly in serious criminal investigations involving multiple jurisdictions.
Morocco strengthens cross-border security cooperation
The arrest also reflects the continued coordination between Moroccan and foreign law enforcement agencies in cases involving international arrest warrants. Interpol mechanisms allow national authorities to share alerts and facilitate the identification of suspects who may move between countries while facing criminal proceedings elsewhere.
For Morocco, the operation underscores the role of its security services in responding to international requests involving serious crimes and in activating established channels of cooperation with foreign police and judicial authorities.
The suspect's legal status and any extradition decision will now depend on the procedures followed by the competent Moroccan authorities and the applicable judicial framework.
