US lawmakers propose bill to ban Chinese humanoid robots in government
Two U.S. senators, Tom Cotton and Chuck Schumer, plan to introduce the American Security Robotics Act, aimed at prohibiting the federal government from purchasing or operating humanoid robots produced by Chinese companies.
The proposed legislation would also block federal funding related to these robots, citing national security concerns. Lawmakers warn that the robots could be used to collect sensitive data or be remotely controlled from China.
Chinese firms like Agibot and Unitree are increasingly competing with U.S. companies, such as Tesla Inc, to produce robots capable of performing tasks from industrial manufacturing to household chores. Unitree, in particular, has been flagged by lawmakers for potential military connections.
The bill reflects growing concern in Washington over emerging technologies and their implications for national security.
