United States migrant hubs: Cambodian migrant repatriated after transfer to Eswatini
A Cambodian migrant expelled from the United States and transferred to Eswatini under a controversial migration policy has been repatriated to his home country, authorities confirmed this week.
The case is part of a broader strategy involving so-called “return hubs,” where migrants are sent to third countries before being returned to their countries of origin. This approach, already discussed or implemented in various regions, reflects growing efforts by governments to manage irregular migration through international partnerships.
Since mid-2025, Eswatini has received several migrants deported from the United States under an agreement with Washington. The deal предусматриes financial support in exchange for hosting individuals considered undesirable by U.S. authorities. According to official statements, the country has taken in multiple detainees as part of this arrangement.
The Cambodian national is the second individual transferred to Eswatini to be repatriated, following a Jamaican migrant returned in 2025. Authorities described the operation as a successful coordination between governments.
Policies involving third-country transfers have sparked debate internationally. Similar concepts have been explored in Europe, including arrangements between Italy and Albania, as well as proposals by the United Kingdom to send migrants to Rwanda. The European Union is also considering regulations that would allow member states to formalize such agreements.
Supporters argue that these measures help reduce irregular migration and ease pressure on national asylum systems. Critics, however, raise concerns about human rights, transparency, and the conditions migrants may face in third countries.
The United States continues to rely on similar mechanisms as part of its immigration enforcement policies, with discussions ongoing about their effectiveness and ethical implications.
