UN expresses concern over rising tensions involving Belarus

The United Nations has expressed growing concern over increasingly tense rhetoric involving Belarus amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, warning that any further escalation could threaten regional stability.

Speaking during a meeting of the UN Security Council, Assistant Secretary-General Martha Pobee stressed the importance of preventing the conflict from expanding beyond its current scope. She called on all parties to exercise restraint, reduce inflammatory rhetoric, and prioritize diplomatic efforts to avoid a broader confrontation.

The remarks came as international attention turned to a reported incident involving a bus carrying a Belarusian children's football team. According to Russian and Belarusian authorities, the vehicle was struck during an attack in Russia's Bryansk region, resulting in civilian casualties, including injuries to several children. Ukrainian officials have not publicly confirmed responsibility for the incident, and details remain contested.

The discussion also followed recent statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who warned that Ukraine could target what Kyiv describes as Russian military assets located inside Belarus if they continue to pose a threat along the shared border. Belarus, a close ally of Russia, has repeatedly denied direct participation in the fighting while maintaining military cooperation with Moscow.

The situation has fueled concerns among international observers that heightened rhetoric and cross-border incidents could increase the risk of a wider regional conflict. Diplomatic experts have emphasized that maintaining open communication channels is essential to reducing misunderstandings and preventing unintended escalation.
